Vaidyaratnam P.S.Varier Ayurved College

About College
The Late Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varrier, the founder of Arya Vaidya Sala, founded the Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier Ayurved College in 1917 in Calicut. The college was administered by the Arya Vaidya Samajam, a registered society. The Arya Vaidayasala, Kottakkal, provided the funding for the Patasala. There was a four-year program that resulted in the “Arya Vaidyan” diploma. The Patasala was moved to Kottakkal in 1924 so that students of the Arya Vaidya Sala Charitable Hospital may receive hands-on instruction. In 1958, the Arya Vaidyan course was discontinued and replaced with the “Diploma in Ayurvedic Medicine (D.A.M)” course. The Aryavaidya Patasala received an upgrading and became an Ayurvedic College in 1959.

The University of Calicut affiliated the Ayurveda College in Kottakkal in 1972, and a new program, the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine (B.A.M.), was launched. The B.A.M. program lasted five years, after which there was a six-month internship. Admission to the B.A.M. programme required a minimum of a pass in the pre-degree with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as major courses.

The Ayurvedacharya [Bachelor in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery] program was first offered in 1979–1980. The four and a half-year B.A.M.S. program is followed by a year of internship training.
