About College
The government-run Institute of Post Graduate Ayurveda Education & Research at Shyamdas Vidya Shastra Peeth in Kolkata was founded in 1976. With an annual intake of six seats, the college is associated with West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata, which is situated in West Bengal.
The “Gourio Sarbo Vidyayatan” (National University), founded by national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, C.R. Dass, Subhash Chandra Bose, and others, contained this Ayurvedic College. In the presence of Sir Nripendra Nath Sarkar, Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishanan opened “Nagarjuna Rasashala,” one of India’s most significant historical sites. For the purpose of constructing a building for this college, the Corporation of Calcutta has graciously granted two bighas of land on the Upper Circular Road (now located at 294/3/1, A.P.C. Road, Kolkata-9).
The Institute also houses a fully functional hospital with 100 beds and patient-facing outdoor spaces. After obtaining an OPD ticket (which costs Rs 2 only), all patients receiving treatment outside receive daily Ayurvedic care from government-trained physicians, including diagnosis, diagnostic examinations, and medication. Every day, hundreds of patients receive treatment both indoors and outdoors for conditions like diabetes, arthritis, joint pain, cough, fever, cold, skin conditions, jaundice, hyperacidity, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, muscle pain, gynecological issues, etc. Everyone has access to contemporary diagnostic services like blood and urine testing, X-rays, eye exams, dental care, ECGs, ultrasounds, yoga, and dental clinics, among others.
