Overview BAMS

BAMS, or Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, is an undergraduate degree program that delves into the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, which originated in India thousands of years ago. This comprehensive course spans five and a half years, including a one-year internship, and offers a deep exploration of Ayurvedic principles, diagnostics, treatments, and surgical procedures.

During the BAMS program, students study subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, herbal medicine, yoga, and traditional Ayurvedic therapies. They also learn about the diagnosis and management of various diseases according to Ayurvedic principles, which emphasize the balance of mind, body, and spirit for holistic health.

In addition to classroom learning, BAMS students gain practical experience through clinical rotations, where they observe and assist experienced practitioners in diagnosing illnesses, prescribing herbal remedies, performing therapeutic procedures, and conducting surgeries following Ayurvedic techniques.

Upon successful completion of the BAMS program and registration with the relevant medical council, graduates are authorized to practice Ayurvedic medicine and surgery, offering holistic healthcare services to individuals seeking natural and traditional healing methods.

History of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine with roots in the Indian subcontinent. Its history dates back thousands of years, making it one of the oldest healthcare systems in the world. The word “Ayurveda” is derived from the Sanskrit words “ayur” (life) and “veda” (knowledge or science), thus translating to “the science of life.”

The origins of Ayurveda are believed to be from ancient texts called the Vedas, particularly the Rigveda and Atharvaveda. These texts contain hymns and rituals that mention various herbs, plants, and practices used for healing and maintaining health.

The principles of Ayurveda were further developed and codified in classical Ayurvedic texts, most notably the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita. These texts, believed to be written around the 6th century BCE, provide detailed descriptions of diseases, their causes, symptoms, and treatments using herbs, diet, lifestyle recommendations, and surgical procedures.

Ayurveda flourished in ancient India, particularly during the Maurya and Gupta empires. It was during this time that Ayurvedic scholars made significant contributions to the understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. They also developed sophisticated surgical techniques, such as rhinoplasty (reconstruction of the nose) and lithotomy (surgical removal of stones).

Over the centuries, Ayurveda has continued to evolve and adapt to changing times. It has been influenced by other medical systems, such as Greek and Chinese medicine, as well as by advancements in science and technology. Today, Ayurveda is practiced worldwide and is recognized as a holistic system of medicine that seeks to balance the body, mind, and spirit to promote health and prevent disease.
