About College
The Department of Ayurveda was established under the Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology (1922–1927), marking the beginning of the Faculty of Ayurveda Institute of Medical Sciences at Banaras Hindu University in 1920. Seth Mathuradas Vissanji Khimji of Bombay donated a substantial amount of Rs. 1.5 Lacs for the Ayurvedic College, thanks to the influence of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviyaji. Donations from Shri Daya Shankar Dev Shankar Dave of Bombay and Kathiawar increased this much more.
Ayurvedic Aushdhalaya was founded in 1924–1925 with three main goals in mind: 1. prepare medicines; 2. teach Ayurvedic students the formulations; and 3. make the formulations reasonably priced and accessible to the general people. A sizable Botanical Garden was established to aid in this arrangement and still serves its purpose for raw materials.
The Ayurvedic Hospital was established on January 19, 1924, with the foundation stone being set by Banaras’ Maharaja Sir Prabhu Narayan Singhji.
